Memahami Present Continuous Tense

Present Continuous Tense (disebut juga Present Progressive Tense) adalah salah satu jenis (waktu) kalimat dalam bahasa Inggris yang menggambarkan peristiwa yang sedang terjadi. Pola kalimatnya, setelah subjek diisi dengan to be 1 + Verb-ing. Lihat table berikut:

- To be 1 = is/ am/ are

-    Dalam kalimat ini biasanya terdapat kata: now, at the moment, right now, at present, this (time)…

Contoh:

1.   We are studying English now (Kita sedang belajar bahasa Inggris sekarang). Contoh (+)

2.   She is listening to the music now (Dia sedang mendengarkan musik sekarang). Contoh ( - )

3.   I am not discussing English with my friends at the moment (Aku tidak sedang mendiskusikan bahasa Inggris dengan teman-temanku saat itu). Contoh (?)

4.   Are they are playing football right now? (Apakah mereka sedang main sepakbola sekarang?) (?)

5.  James, the gardener, is watering plants now. (James, si tukang kebun, sedang menyirami tanaman sekarang).                                                                                                                                    (+)

 

PENGGUNAAN Present continuous tense ada 2, yaitu:

1. Untuk menggambarkan bahwa subject/ pelakunya sedang melakukan suatu kegiatan.

2. Untuk menggambarkan satu atau lebih peristiwa yang sedang terjadi secara BERSAMAAN. Peristiwa tersebut biasanya dihubungkan dengan conjunction (kata sambung) while atau and.

Contoh:

1.      Mom: What are your sisters doing now? Are they studying?

Ani  : Yes mom, they are studying. Ririn is studying Biology while Rini is solving math problems.

 

2.      Uncle  : Are your parents at home?

Jimmy : Yes, they are. My father is reading newspapers in the living room and my mom is

              cooking in the kitchen.

Teks di atas terdiri dari 3 (tiga) paragraf.

Paragraf 1 terdiri dari 5 (lima) kalimat. Kalimat 1, BENTUK Present Continuous Tense (to be 1 + Verb-ing), baik jenis (+), ( - ) maupun (?) yang muncul pada teks di atas adalah:

Paragaraf 1

Kalimat 1: Chika is helping to cut some onions, chilies, carrots, potatoes and other vegetables.

Jawaban: is helping

Kalimat 2: She is also writing her grandmother’s recipe

Jawaban:

Kalimat 3: She plans to make chicken soup at home next Monday

Jawaban: None (tidak ada)

Kalimat 4: She is making the chicken soup for her mother

Jawaban:

Kalimat 5: Next Monday is her mother’s birthday

Paragraf 2 terdiri dari 3 (lima) kalimat. Kalimat 1, BENTUK Present Continuous Tense (to be 1 + Verb-ing), baik jenis (+), ( - ) maupun (?) yang muncul pada teks di atas adalah:

Kalimat 1: An hour later, Chika and grandparents have finished eating chicken soup

Jawaban:

Kalimat 2: Now, Chika is listening to her grandfather’s story
